Camper Slides

How long is to long for a slide to be in the out position? What damages might I get if my slide is out for to long? I'm in the military and am possibly moving to another post but am not taking my family so I was considering living in a travel trailer. Trailers with slides offer more space but is the space worth the heart ache of repairs and what not? I currently do not own an RV. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
